Getting Started in Micro Helicopters

Micro Helicopter

Micro helicopter is the name given to small electric powered remote control heli models. From the toy Silverlit PicoZ to the high spec Buzz Fly and ESky Honey Bee RC helicopters. These first became popular about 5 years ago, when micro electronics and battery developments allowed for small lightweight model construction. Recently, more technical advances have given rise to sub-micro helicopters, which are approximately one third the size of the micro helicopters now available. BuzzFlyer Micro Helicopters

Which is the best micro helicopter?

Several basic designs of micro helicopters exist, some more maneuverable than others (such as helicopters with collective pitch). The more maneuverable designs are often harder to fly, but benefit from greater aerobatic capabilities.

If you are a novice its best to start with a fixed pitch model such as the Nine Eagles Solo Pro, this will require less set-up and be less sensitive to control inputs. This will allow you to become familiar with the helicopter's behaviour and avoid the frustrations of the more advanced CP models.

How do micro helicopters work?

Transmitter controls allow flyers to control the throttle (and collective on CP models), the cyclic controls (pitch and roll), and the tail rotor (yaw).

The various helicopter controls are effected by means of small servo motors. A piezoelectric gyroscope is typically used on the tail rotor (yaw) control to counter wind and torque reaction induced tail movement. This "gyro" adjusts the control signal to the tail rotor motor or servo.

Micro helicopter buyer's guide

Micro helicopters can range in price from as little as £69 to several hundreds of pounds or more. The ESKY Honey Bee is an ideal fixed pitch beginners helicopter - The CP2 version offers more responsive performance. The larger models such as the Honey Bee King are more expensive but come with more advanced features and complex build offering greater control and aerobatic potential.
